This goal of this grand math fair is composed of 3 events: (a) a math competition\, (b) a math fun fair and (c) a parenting seminar. The main goal is the simulate interest in Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects within the youth at their early ages. \nMathComp\n \n \nMathComp (Math Competition) provides young students the opportunity to demonstrate their math problem solving skills. Registration is required HERE. The fee is $10 for member parents\, and $15 for non-member parents. Each registered participant will receive a free event T-shirt. The competition is not restricted to any ethnicity group. \nThe contesters must participate for the same grade he/she is at in the 2014-2015 academic year. Sandbagging may result in being disqualified. 1st\, 2nd and 3rd prizes\, and honorable mentions will be awarded to each grade\, and the names of the winners will be published in the local newspapers and on the CIE/USA-DFW website. The results of the competition will also be posted on the CIE/USA-DFW website after the event. \nParenting Seminar\n \n \nWhile the children are taking their competition tests\, all parents are invited to join us in the free parenting seminar. \nMathFun\n \nMathFun is an interactive program allowing parent/children to work together in solving math and engineering quizzes and games which stimulate their interest in mathematics. Every year\, we have about 20 schools\, companies\, institutions and organizations bringing interesting math and engineering materials to the site to interact closely with the students. We focused specifically on application and how personalization is revolutionizing our daily life. \n \n \n \nSpeaker Information\nKeynote: Joel Austin\, VP & Chief Information Officer\, Oncor Electric Delivery\n\nJoel Austin is the Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Oncor\, the sixth largest electric Transmission and Distribution Company in the United States. As head of Oncor’s Information Technology organization\, Austin is responsible for strategy\, information security\, new systems development and production operations and management of Oncor’s extensive sourcing relationships. \nBeginning five years ago\, Oncor initiated one of the most comprehensive advanced grid investment programs. As a result of this $1-billion-per-year investment program\, Oncor is quickly proving itself a technology company as much as an electric utility. Austin oversees the implementation and operation of information technology platforms and communication networks\, as well as management of the massive influx of data that enables the company to improve grid operation and customer interaction. He also is responsible for safeguarding Oncor’s data\, ensuring that Oncor’s and its customers’ data is managed and secured in the safest way possible and meets the highest industry standards. \nUnder his leadership\, Oncor’s grid\, one of the nation’s most advanced smart grids\, safely communicates billions of bits of data through a secure network while its power lines move electricity to 3.2 million homes and businesses in Texas. In 2012\, Austin was part of the team that linked Oncor’s advanced metering system with its outage management system\, allowing for wireless and automatic communication and repair of potential power issues on the grid. \nHe has more than 26 years of experience in the energy\, finance and software industries at Informix\, ENSERCH\, Deloitte & Touché and the Texas Utility companies\, where he has held a number of business operations\, IT and leadership roles. \nAustin serves on several educational and civic boards\, including the Information Technology Operations Management Advisory Board at Southern Methodist University and Treasurer\, and Board Member for the North Texas Business Council for the Arts. \nAustin holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and business administration from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in business from the University of Missouri in Kansas City. \nWeijun Lee\, VP Cloud Computing and IT Division\, ZTE Texas USA\n\nMr. Weijun Lee is a veteran in the telecom industry for 20+ years and leads the technical marketing and strategic directions of ZTE\’s multimedia and cloud computing solutions. He is responsible for providing business development and product strategy for Fujitsu packet optical networking solutions\, focusing on architecting solutions that support the cable and MSO industry. \nPrior to joining Fujitsu in 2011\, Bill worked at Cox Communications for 14 years\, where he held a variety of executive engineering and leadership roles at both the corporate and system level. \nBill holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Management from Bellevue University in Nebraska\, and a Master of Applied Science in Telecommunications Management from the University of Denver. He is also an MEF Carrier Ethernet Certified Professional (MEF-CECP). \nJon Pettit\, AMI Program Manager\, Oncor Electric Delivery\n\nJon has been with Oncor Electric Delivery (and the former TXU family of companies) for over 28 years. For the last 11 years\, she focused on various Business Intelligence\, Big Data and Social Media Analytics Projects across multiple industries. Now she is leading the big data analytics practice at ATCG Solutions. \nPrior to starting ATCG Solutions\, She led the BI practice at IBM for the distribution sector. He is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington. \nAriton Xhafa\, Senior Technical Staff & Project Manager in IoT Lab\, Texas Instruments Inc.\nAriton Xhafa received his Ph.D. degree from Carnegie Mellon University. Ariton is with IoT Lab at Texas Instruments (TI) and is a well-known expert on wireless networks protocol design\, algorithms and standardization. Ariton has led TI’s efforts in IEEE 802.11n on medium access control\, where his efforts led to creation of new adhoc group to find and propose solutions for 20/40 MHz problem. Ariton also led multi-radio wireless coexistence project in 2.4 GHz band\, focusing and developing optimal solutions for WLAN/Bluetooth coexistence. Ariton is currently leading the project in IoT Lab that enables and differentiates TI’s radio platforms while making them IoT ready. Ariton has filed more than 95 patent applications with 35 patents issued\, and has published 9 journal papers and more than 35 conference papers. The Skyrise Challenge VRC (regional level) will be hosted on Feb 7\, 2015\, at Rice Middle School\, with 24 teams. \nVEX Robotics Competition (VRC) is for middle and high school (11-18 years old). This uses the VEX Robotics Design System. It offers teams of students that are tasked with designing and building a robot to play against other teams from around the world in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test on the playing field as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork\, leadership\, communications\, and more. More than 10\,000 teams from 32 countries\, in over 750 tournaments. The engineering challenge as game varies by year. The 2014-2015 competition is called Skyrise. His responsibilities cover the full scope of business activities from marketing\, customer relationships and new technology/product development to factory manufacturing operation and supply chain management of six factories located around the world. Prior to the business assignment\, Dr. Wang worked in operation which he contributed to 4 advanced wafer fab start-ups and served as wafer fab manager of two TI advanced wafer fabs. Prior to TI\, Dr. Wang was the Director of Crystal Engineering/QA of Ethyl Corporation. Prior to this\, Dr. Wang was a Member of the Technical Staff of the Hewlett-Packard Company.\nFaa-Ching earned his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. He received a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh\, and a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from National Central University in Taiwan.\nDr. Wang holds four U.S. patents and five invention disclosures\, and is the author of 39 articles published in a variety of technical publications. Prior to the business assignment\, Dr. Wang worked in operation which he contributed to 4 advanced wafer fab start-ups and served as wafer fab manager of two TI advanced wafer fabs. Prior to TI\, Dr. Wang was the Director of Crystal Engineering/QA of Ethyl Corporation. Shapard\, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Oncor Electric Delivery\, as the dinner banquet keynote speaker on August 16\, 2014. \nOncor is one of the largest electricity transmission and distribution companies in the country\, serving over 7 million people in north Texas. Under Shapard’s leadership\, Oncor is an industry leader in innovation and in the deployment of new technologies to improve the quality of electric service\, enable consumers\, lower costs and reduce emissions. Oncor has an infrastructure investment program\, which is focused on transmission and distribution network expansion and upgrades\, including one of the largest deployments of advanced meters in the country\, leading a significant expansion of the state’s transmission grid and other new digital technologies across the network. \nShapard also serves as the Chairman of GridWise Alliance (GWA). GWA is a leading advocacy organization focused on the advancement of all aspects of the country’s electric grid. GWA is comprised of over 100 organizations\, including utilities\, telecoms\, technology\, equipment manufacturers\, consultants\, labs and universities. He also serves as a board member of Leidos Corporation. Leidos is a scientific\, engineering\, systems integration and technical services company focused on national defense\, healthcare and engineering. \nShapard has a wealth of operating\, financial and leadership experience from past positions. He rejoined Oncor in late 2005 as a strategic advisor\, helping to implement and execute growth and development strategies. Previously\, he had served the company for 20 years in various financial and operating leadership roles\, finishing as managing director of former subsidiary TXU Australia which owned and operated an electric generation business\, a wholesale energy trading business\, electric and gas retail businesses\, and electric and gas regulated utility businesses based in Melbourne Australia. \nPrior to his current tenure at Oncor\, he served as chief financial officer of Tenet Healthcare Corporation where he oversaw all financial activities for Tenet and its subsidiaries. Tenet operated one of the largest for profit hospital groups in the US employing over 75\,000 people across the country. Prior to this position\, he was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Exelon Corporation. Exelon is one the largest electricity generators and utility operators in the US. Before joining Exelon\, he was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Covanta Energy Corporation. Shapard joined Covanta to help prepare the company for its bankruptcy filing and to file a plan of reorganization. Prior to that\, Shapard was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Ultramar Diamond Shamrock\, a leading North American refining and marketing company. At UDS\, Shapard led a financial restructuring of the company and other initiatives leading to the company’s merger with Valero Energy\, which created the nation’s second-largest oil refiner. \nShapard is active civically. Simon is currently a Project Manager in ATD Technology Transfer team at Texas Instruments (TI). Simon served as the Vice Chair and Chair of TI Chinese Initiative (TI CI) in 2003 and 2004 respectively and supported many events hosted by non-profit organizations such as CIE and AACC as well as fundraising campaigns for JDRF and United Way. He is currently an active member of TI CI Advisor Board and CIE/USA-DFW 2014 Convention Chair. Simon also served as a Board Member of AACC in 2005. Simon’s hobbies include hiking and watching football games. Favorite hiking places are Big Bend National Park (N.P.)\, Yosemite N.P. and Grand Canyon N.P. DESCRIPTION:2014 MathComp Winner\, Test Results\, and News Release\n\n2014 MathComp Winner List [PDF]\n2014 MathComp Test Results [PDF]\n2014 News Release Chinese [DOC]\n\n \n \nThe Annual MathComp/MathFun and Parenting Seminar is the flagship CIE/USA-DFW youth program attracting participation of about a thousand students\, parents\, educators and volunteers each year. This goal of this grand math fair is composed of 3 events: (a) a math competition\, (b) a math fun fair and (c) a parenting seminar. The main goal is the simulate interest in Science\, Technology\, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects within the youth at their early ages. \nMathComp\n \nMathComp (Math Competition) provides young students the opportunity to demonstrate their math problem solving skills. Registration is required. The fee is $10 for member parents\, and $15 for non-member parents. Each registered participant will receive a free event T-shirt. The competition is not restricted to any ethnicity group. \nThe contesters must participate for the same grade he/she is at in the 2013-2014 academic year. Sandbagging may result in being disqualified. 1st\, 2nd and 3rd prizes\, and honorable mentions will be awarded to each grade\, and the names of the winners will be published in the local newspapers and on the CIE/USA-DFW website. The results of the competition will also be posted on the CIE/USA-DFW website after the event. \nParenting Seminar – “The Playful Parent: Encouraging Self-Guided Education” by Mathew Crawford\n \nWhile the children are taking their competition tests\, all parents are invited to join us in the free parenting seminar. We are honored to have Mathew Crawford\, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Daedalus Education to be the Parenting Seminar speaker. His presentation will be on “The Playful Parent: Encouraging Self-Guided Education”. \n Mr. Crawford is a three-time invitee to the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program where the U.S. team is prepared for the International Mathematical Olympiad. He is also a problem writer for numerous national competitions including the USA Mathematical Talent Search\, Mu Alpha Theta\, the iTest\, and the San Diego Mathematical Olympiad. Among the students of Mathew are numerous winners of national (MATHCOUNTS\, AMC\, AIME\, USAMO) and international (IMO) math and science (Siemens-Westinghouse) competitions. This event is also open to the public. \nMathFun\n \nMathFun is an interactive program allowing parent/children to work together in solving math and engineering quizzes and games which stimulate their interest in mathematics. Every year\, we have about 20 schools\, companies\, institutions and organizations bringing interesting math and engineering materials to the site to interact closely with the students. DESCRIPTION: \nThe annual convention is a celebration of the services that CIE/USA-DFW has delivered to the DFW community\, and to affirm the partnership we have with industry\, universities\, government and community in which our members live and work. CIE/USA takes great pride of its 96 years of history\, serving and representing the community of engineers of Chinese cultural heritage. As a non-profit professional organization\, CIE/USA plays an important role in our economy and our society\, especially with the growing needs for business savvy skilled workers in the field of engineering and science. \nThe convention will feature three events: \nVIP Reception (5:30 – 6:30 pm)\nVIP Reception is by invitation only. Proclamation of “CIE Day” by DFW cities will be presented\, and city mayors\, corporate senior management and academic leaders will be invited to speak at reception. \n1st Young Achievers (YA) Reunion (4:30 – 6:30 pm)\nCIE Young Achievers are capable individuals demonstrating expansive interests\, a drive to succeed\, and high performance. These individuals are selected during their high school years. At the Young Achiever Reunion\, held during the 2013 annual convention\, Young Achievers from previous years will gather for to catch up and share their experiences\, ambitions\, and lessons. Dr. Keh-Shew Lu\, founder of CIE/USA-DFW and president of Diodes will provide the keynote speech. Wen-Shin Wang\, a former YA\, will be speaking career development\, networking\, and job experiences. Former Young Achievers can socialize\, and bios of current experiences and future work will be available in a streaming presentation. At the conclusion of the event\, there will be a panel discussion for various topics revolving about success in the workplace through soft skills and effective communication\, including conflict resolution\, influencing\, and pitfalls in communication. It attracted participation of about a thousand students\, parents\, educators and volunteers each year. \nThis grand math fair is composed of a math competition\, a math fun fair and a parenting seminar. It will be held on June 15\, 2013 (Saturday) 12:00pm – 5:00 pm at the Collin College\, Spring Creek Campus at the Conference Center. \nMathComp (Math Competition) provides young students the opportunity to demonstrate their math problem solving skills. The fee is $5 for member parents\, and $10 for non-member parents. Free event T-shirts will be given to all contesters. The contesters must participate for the same grade he/she is at in 2012-2013 academic year. Sandbagging may result in being disqualified. 1st\, 2nd and 3rd prizes\, and honorable mentions will be awarded to each grade with trophies\, and winner\’s names will be published in the local newspapers and on the CIE website. DESCRIPTION:Roles and Responsibilities of Asian Universities in a New Global Academic-Business Paradigm\nby Dr. Da-Hsuan Feng\n \n21st century\, even in these fledgling moments\, is met with transformational changes. These changes cannot be more obvious than the creation of a new Global academic- business paradigm. Sitting in the middle of this paradigm is Asia\, especially North Asia\, Southeast Asia and South Asia. These regions are indeed the focus of the world in the 21st century. They are undergoing dizzying economic\, cultural\, political and unexpected and 20th century unthinkable tectonic shifts. With this as underpinning\, Dr. Feng’s talk which could be a summary of his five year stay in Asia\, breathing day in and day out of higher education atmosphere\, will discuss what mindset Asian higher education needs to have in order to navigate in such exciting and turbulent waters. Indeed\, what and how Asian universities are meeting or attempting to meet their new challenges and become the engines of progress for their respective regions. Finally\, what Global responsibilities they should assume as they emerge so rapidly in the Global higher education radar screen. \nDr. Feng received an B.A. in Physics from Drew University\, an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He was born in New Delhi\, India and has been a global traveler ever since. He was a Technical advisor to Vice Chairman of the US Congressional Arm Services Committee from 1995 to 1998\, Vice President of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) from 1998 to 2000\, Vice President for Research and Economic Development of The University of Texas at Dallas from 2001 to 2007\, Senior Executive Vice President\, National Cheng Kung University from 2007 to 2011. In 2007\, he was appointed by Li Ka-Shing Foundation to be a Board of Trustees member of Shantou University. He was also a co-Chair since 2007 of the Britton Chance Center for Biomedical Photonics of Huazhong University of Science & Technology. In 2011\, he was appointed by Elsevier to be a member of its Academic Executive Advisory Board. He also co-sponsored CIRA. He has collaborated with Asian colleagues over past 30 years – including becoming the Honorary Board of Trustees of Nanjing University in 2003\, and becoming honorary and guest professors of twelve Mainland’s universities

DESCRIPTION: Words from Program Chair\nDear Young Professionals\, \nI am excited to announce that the CIE Fall Leadership Assessment and Mentoring Program will be held at the Hoblitzelle Hall Auditorium\, HH 2.402 of University of Texas at Dallas on Saturday\, December 1st. \nThe Fall LAMP\, or 2012 CIE Fall Leadership Assessment and Mentoring Program\, is co-hosted by Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA DFW Chapter (CIE) and Friendship Association of Chinese Students and Scholars (FACSS) at University of Texas at Dallas. \nIn additional to the exciting keynote speech\, we have redesigned the program\’s panel session to feature “Live Job Interview”. We will afford selected candidates live\, on-stage mock interview opportunities to interact directly with high-profile panelists from leading com \npanies. Our panelists will conduct mock interview for proposed positions in business\, engineering and science. Prior to Speetra\, she worked as a management consultant. She has worked with a wide variety of clients ranging from schools to medical management companies\, both in the public and private sectors. Her main tasks included identifying areas of weakness as well as opportunities\, possible causes preventing growth\, making recommendations\, and providing clients the assistance needed to get results. \n \n\n\n\n \nAndy Pollock\, Panelist \n \nMr. Pollock currently serves as the Director of Marketing for Briggs Equipment\, a Sammons Enterprises Company. In this role Andy provides marketing and sales support for over 32 branch locations in the U.S. along with digital marketing support for the Mexico division of Briggs Equipment. Briggs Equipment is one of the largest material handling distributors in the world providing the sale and service of industrial forklifts and warehouse equipment. Prior to moving to Dallas\, Andy was based in New York City working in advertising and publishing for Conde Nast and Meredith Publications. In these roles\, Andy helped develop national marketing campaigns and assisted in developing multi-platform advertising commitments across a variety of consumer categories. \n \n\n\n\n \nKathy Lam\, Panelist \nKathy Lam is responsible for Human Resources and brings 21 years of experience in all aspects of human resources to Prodea Systems. \nPrior to joining the company\, Kathy served as the Director of Human Resources for Sonus Networks. She was responsible for a global organization in excess of 700 employees located in the US\, EMEA and APAC. During her tenure at Sonus Networks\, she managed the human resources activities for multiple acquisitions\, including her prior organization\, telecom technologies\, inc.\n\n\n\n \nMaggie Rubin Hua\, Panelist \n \nAs a Senior Financial Analyst\, Maggie is responsible for evaluating capital investment opportunities. Prior to joining AT&T\, Maggie worked as equity analyst in the Aerospace industry. DESCRIPTION:Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA – DFW Chapter invites you to join the CIE Engineering Business Forum. \nThe Chinese Institute of Engineers – DFW Chapter (CIE-DFW) and the Greater Dallas Asian American Chamber of Commerce (GDAACC) will host the 2012 Engineering Business Forum at the Maribelle Davis Library\, 7501 Independence Parkway\, Plano\, Texas on Friday November 16\, 2012. The forum is free and open to the public. The event will begin at 12:30PM and conclude by 4:30PM. The forum seeks to connect minority owned small businesses with major corporate and government buyers who are in need of diversified procurement for engineering services and technology products. Anticipated participants at this year’s event include the U.S. Patent Office\, Huawei\, DISD\, Trinity Infrastructure\, Dallas Public Works and Transportation\, Hartline Dacus Barger Dreyer LLP and more. \nThe program will include informational sessions regarding company and government procurement procedures and networking time for all participants. Buyers will provide short presentations about their procurement process\, goods and services needed. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion in which the buyers answer questions from the participating suppliers.
