DESCRIPTION:Event Introduction\nThe Youth Speech Workshop is part of the CIE/USA-DFW’s Youth English Speech Contest (YESC) Program. The goal of the event is to stimulate young students’ interests and boost their confidence and competence in public speaking. This event has served the DFW community for over 10 years\, and each year it attracts hundreds of participants including students\, parents\, educators\, and volunteers. \nThis year\, we are excited to host this workshop virtually to provide an educational and fun experience for children and their families. We have invited some of the best speakers from Texas Dragon Toastmasters Club to present crucial techniques in public speaking\, including how to organize a speech\, how to use vocal variety and body language\, and much more. Afterwards\, student speakers will apply these techniques with demonstrative speeches\, followed by instant evaluations from experienced evaluators\, including some Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM). \nWe are also privileged to have 2003 World Champion of Public Speaking\, Jim Key\, to be our guest speaker! He has worked with various top Fortune 500 companies to hold programs ranging from effective communication\, perseverance\, and leadership\, and will share his insights here followed by a Q&A session. \nThe event will be held on June 20\, 2020 via Zoom and it is FREE. His work has been funded through science and education grants from multiple agencies\, including a $12.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation.\nHe earned a Ph.D. in theoretical physical chemistry from Purdue University and served as Dean of Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) and Dean of Honors College\, University of North Texas (UNT). He is a professor of Chemistry in UNT. \nAmy Li (Student) \nAmy is an incoming 2020 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) freshman. She is from Highland Park High School. She has been active in high school math contests. She is USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAJMO) Qualifier\, Math Prize for Girls Olympiad (MPFGO) Qualifier. She is Program Director of Health and Education Largesse Program. \nJulia Camacho (Student) \nJulia is an incoming 2020 Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) freshman. Julia is from TAMS. Before becoming CEO\, Mr. Magness served as ERCOT’s general counsel. Mr. Magness has been active in the utility business for over 25 years\, working with electric and telecommunications companies nationwide. He has held executive management positions in the public and private sectors\, and served as lead counsel in numerous state and federal regulatory matters. Early in his career\, served as a federal prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s office. Mr. Magness represents the Independent System Operator/Regional Transmission Organization (ISO/RTO) sector on the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Member Representatives Committee\, is a member of the Executive Committee of the ISO/RTO Council\, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station Smart Grid Center. Mr. Magness grew up in Orange\, Texas\, received his bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin\, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. As the company\’s President and COO\, a role Dr. Chan held for 14 years prior to his 2012 appointment to President and co-CEO\, he guided internal operations and worldwide field organizations. Dr. Chan joined Synopsys in 1990 as Vice President of Applications and Services where he helped build the Technical Field organization. He has sponsored several key initiatives such as entering the IP market\, and personally facilitated key acquisitions such as Avant!\, Virage Logic\, Magma Design Automation and SpringSoft. In 2014\, he led Synopsys\’ entry into the software testing market with the acquisition of Coverity\, and the software security market with the acquisition of Codenomicon. Prior to Synopsys\, Dr. Chan contributed to industry leading companies like NEC Corporation\, where he was General Manager of the microprocessor group\, responsible for marketing all NEC chip devices in North America. Prior to NEC\, Dr. Chan was an engineering manager at Intel Corporation. Registration is required. Early registration fee is $15 before May 16th\, then $20 before May 27th. All students Grades 1~8 are welcome! \nContestants will participate only for the same grade he or she is at the 2018-2019 academic year. Sandbagging may result in being disqualified. Top scorers and honorable mentions will be awarded to each grade\, and the names of the winners will be published on the CIE/USA-DFW Chapter\’s website. \nParenting Seminar and Panel Discussion:\n \n \nWhile students are competing at the MATH test\, all parents are invited to attend the Parenting Seminar and Panel Discussion (the second program)\, which is free to MathComp participants\’ parents. \n2019 Speakers and Panelists:\nDr. Jianzhong Su\nDr. Jianzhong Su received his B.S in Applied Mathematics from Shanghai Jiaotong University and earned his PhD in mathematics from University of Minnesota. He is a professor of Mathematics and the chairman of the Department of Mathematics\, University of Texas at Arlington. \nHis research area is in applied mathematics related to computational neuroscience\, optical diffusive tomography and mathematical biology. \nJett Wang (Student)\nJett Wang is incoming 2019 MIT freshman. He has been active in high school math contests\, and qualified for the 2019 USA Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) team. He is also 2018 USA Physics Olympiad Bronze Medalist. \nRichard Luo (Student)\nRichard is a senior student from Highland Park high school. An avid STEM enthusiast\, he gained his first exposure to competition math at the CIE Math Competition. He competed in many years\, and continued his involvement by volunteering at many CIE events. Richard will attend Harvard in the Fall 2019. \nMathFun\n \nThe third program “MathFun” is an interactive program which allows parents and children to work together in solving engineering quizzes & games and stimulating their interest in mathematics. DESCRIPTION:2018 CIE/USA-DFW Fall Technical Symposium\n\n\n2018 CIE/USA-DFW Young Achiever Awards\n\n\n\n\n \n \nDinner Banquet Keynote Speaker\nDr. Simon Yeung\, Senior Vice President\, R & D\, PepsiCo\n \nDr Simon Yeung is a senior R&D executive experienced in multiple technologies and markets. His industry experience and knowledge includes power generation\, transportation\, controls\, plastics\, coatings\, renewable energy\, consumer electronics\, consumer goods\, composites\, and packaging. In addition to being an innovator personally with multiple patents\, Dr Yeung has led and transformed large\, global organizations in product development\, total cost out\, and technical services for corporations while balancing multiple objectives and budgets. He has successfully commercialized technology platforms\, and is well versed in intellectual property and technology transfer\, contract and partnership negotiation (e.g. JDA\, JV)\, capital projects\, Six Sigma\, as well as experienced in working with and facilitating cross-functional teams to create and implement strategic plans that yield significant and margin-accretive results. \nDr Yeung started his professional career at General Electric Corporate R&D center\, where he worked on research projects in multiple areas. He moved to GE Plastics (now SABIC Innovation Plastics) where he held a number of R&D leadership positions in process technology\, product development\, and platform development. In 2007\, Dr Yeung joined The Dow Chemical Company as Solar R&D Director\, where he started the Dow Solar business. In 2009\, he was named Global R&D Director for Materials Science and Engineering in Corporate R&D in Dow Chemical\, where he led a global\, multi-disciplinary organization engaging in innovative research and development activities in materials science\, materials and parts design\, modeling\, and processing. He also led and implemented a front-end exploration approach in technology assessment and development\, as well as Six Sigma for Corporate R&D in Dow Chemical. Dr Yeung then spent 4 years at Avery Dennison\, first as the Global Vice President of R&D for Graphics and Reflective Solutions (GRS) and Performance Tapes (PT) with a combined revenue of $850MM\, then as Global Vice President of Segment Innovation responsible for leading innovation for 8 different market segments with the total revenue exceeding US$4.7B. After that\, he went to Valspar where he was Vice President of R&D for Consumer Paint for Valspar Corporation. He joined PepsiCo in Jan 2017 as Senior Vice President R&D\, Snacks Functions Capability\, responsible for science and technology for Snacks worldwide. Her focus area covers: connected sensors\, ultra-low-power connected MCU and analog as well as security.\nXiaolin is well-known as an embedded system and software expert inside and outside TI and has given keynote and plenary talks at numerous technical conferences. She is the author/co-author of more than 60 U.S. issued patents and the recipient of a series of awards: 2016 Asian American Engineer of the Year\, and Society of Women Engineers (SWE)\, etc. \nKeynote 2: Dissolvable Fracturing Tools: How to turn a terrible material into a great product\nDr. Michael Fripp (Chief Scientific Advisor\, Halliburton)\nMichael Fripp is a Distinguished Engineer and has worked for the last 18 years creating new oilfield technology for Halliburton. He has over 350 awarded and pending patents that address many aspects of downhole oil and gas production. He is a principal inventor of the materials in dissolving hydraulic fracturing tools as well as of oilfield acoustic telemetry and fluidic devices. He has been named as an Innovative Thinker by World Oil Magazine and has been recognized as a Texas Genius by the organization Genius Awards. Dr. Fripp has a PhD degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and is a licensed professional engineer. He has authored numerous technical papers and has coauthored 4 books. \nKeynote 3: Advanced Analytics to Optimize Customer Experience in Retail Electricity Delivery\nDarshan Bhate (VP of Strategy\, Pricing & Analytics\, TXU Energy)\n\nDarshan Bhate is the Vice President of Strategy\, Pricing & Analytics of TXU Energy\, where he is responsible for the P&L for the Residential and Mass Markets business units\, and leading the enterprise analytics function that generate measurable incremental value through the application of AI/ML principles and techniques. Before joining TXU Energy\, Darshan worked in Investment Banking (Mergers & Acquisitions) Group of Credit Suisse in New York city. Darshan graduated from University of Michigan – Stephen M. They attract the participation of nearly 1000 students\, parents\, educators\, and volunteers each year. This grand math fair is composed of three events: (1) a math competition\, (2) a math fun fair\, and (3) a parenting seminar. The main goal is to stimulate young students\’ interest in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Math (STEM) subjects. \nMathComp\n \nMathComp (Math Competition) provides young students the opportunity to demonstrate their math problem solving skills. Registration is required HERE. The fee is $10 for member parents\, and $15 for non-member parents. Each registered participant will receive a free event T-shirt. The competition is not restricted to any ethnicity group. \nThe contesters must participate for the same grade he/she is at in the 2017-2018 academic year. Sandbagging may result in being disqualified. Top scorers and honorable mentions will be awarded to each grade\, and the names of the winners will be published on the CIE/USA-DFW website. \nParenting Seminar and Panel Discussion\n \nWhile the students compete\, all parents are invited to attend the Parenting Seminar and Panel Discussion\, which is free to parents of MathComp participants. We are honored to have former USA International Mathmatical Olympiad Head Coach Dr. Zuming Feng\, 2018 MIT freshman Katherine Xiong\, and 2017/2018 USA International Mathematics Olympiad team qualifier Vincent Huang to be our speakers and panelists. \nSpeakers and Panelists: \nDr. Zuming Feng \nDr. Zuming Feng earned his PhD in mathematics from Johns Hopkins University. Since then\, he has become the nation’s leading educator in middle school and high school mathematics programs. He has contributed extensively and significantly to the USA Mathematical Olympiad program and International Mathmatical Olympiad movement. DESCRIPTION:Introduction\nThe CIE Mentoring Program (CMP) event is one of the long-standing CIE/USA-DFW events featuring “Leadership” and “Career Mentoring” for young professionals. This event is especially designed for graduating university students and young professionals who desire to enhance their knowledge and hand-on experience on hiring process\, career development\, corporate culture\, and leadership. The goal of our program: foster relationships with young students/professionals and provide guidance as they navigate the early challenges of adulthood. Mentoring can be dated back to ancient Greek Mythology\, primarily the story of Mentor from Homer\’s Odyssey. As Odysseus was fighting in the Trojan War\, he put a friend\, Mentor\, in charge of his most prized possession: his son\, Telemachus. Mentor became Telemachus\’ coach\, counselor\, teacher\, protector\, and trusted advisor as he helped him grow from a young man into adulthood while his father was away. The word Mentor eventually evolved from a name into a word meaning trusted advisor\, friend\, teacher\, and wise person. In addition\, history has shown us many examples of successful mentoring relationships: Socrates and Plato\, Hayden and Beethoven\, Freud and Jung. Mentoring is now considered a fundamental form of human development where someone invests their time\, energy\, and personal knowledge in the growth of another person. This program seeks to do exactly that. \nAs a Mentor\, you will have the ability to change a young person\’s life. You will work directly with your mentee(s) to help address a myriad of topics such as: information overload\, work/life balance\, generational issues\, communications\, developing networking skills\, culture transitions\, setting career goals\, bridging the college gap\, and career guidance. These topics are essential to helping our young professionals evolve in to the future leaders of tomorrow. \nSo why become a Mentor? Mentoring isn\’t just useful for the person you are assisting\, but it can help you in various ways. First\, you experience the satisfaction from supporting another human being. Studies have shown that the greatest single aspect of becoming successful and overcoming hardships is through overwhelming support and motivation. This can be observed by little league coaches and their impacts on children\, Boy Scout leaders and their pupils\, and CEO\’s and other executive leaders. Second\, mentors grow themselves! You will hone your development on key skills such as listening\, questioning\, facilitation\, empathizing\, planning\, and confidence. Furthermore\, as you work closer and closer with your mentee(s)\, you will gain a sense of self-reflection. You will notice your own areas of improvement\, your own weaknesses\, and your own strengths. Together\, you will both grow beyond expectations and that is what mentoring is about. \nAs a Mentee\, you will learn from local leaders in a variety of industries. You will work directly with your mentor(s) to get answers on topics that are important to you: setting goals\, engaging in effective communication\, handling conflict in the workplace\, work/life balance\, job seeking skills\, and how to become a strong leader. These of course\, are just a small sample of questions that you may have. As part of the CMP\, the program is designed to put you\, the mentee\, in the drivers’ seat. In addition\, the CMP steering committee will work hard to pair you with a mentor that matches you direct needs and areas of interest. We will evaluate you and your mentor based on the personal activities you share\, the level of education\, the industry you are in\, and the type of mentoring you are looking for. \nSo why become a Mentee? Everyone needs a little help and advice at some point in our lives. Very few (and we mean very)\, have the ability to navigate the complexities of life without needing some external guidance. Through the helping hand of a mentor\, you have the one thing many people do not: a sounding board. Struggling with handling a high intensity job and maintaining a healthy life? We guarantee the mentors have been there. Worried about getting a job upon graduation? Yeah\, they have been there as well. By interacting with a proven industry leader\, your worries will subside as you receive advice from a mentor who has made it. Suggested schedule is once every 2 week\, ideally face to face\, or via phone calls\, Text or Email.\nDiscuss formality of meetings: Agenda\, minutes\, action items.\nAgree on communication tools/style. Spong\, Dean\, Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science\, The University of Texas at Dallas\n \nDr. Mark W. Spong is currently the Dean of the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science and Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Spong received his D.Sc. degree in systems science and mathematics in 1981 from Washington University in St. Louis. He has held faculty positions at Lehigh University (1981-82)\, Cornell University (1982-84)\, and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1984-2008). \nAt UTD\, Dr. Spong holds both the Lars Magnus Ericsson Chair and the Excellence in Education Chair. Dr. Spong’s main research interests are in robotics\, mechatronics\, and nonlinear control theory. His notable awards include the 2016 Nyquist Prize from the ASME Dynamics and Control Division\, the 2011 Pioneer Award from the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society\, the first IROS Fumio Harashima Award for Innovative Technologies in 2007\, the IEEE Transactions on Control Systems Technology Outstanding Paper Award\, the Senior Scientist Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation\, the Distinguished Member Award from the IEEE Control Systems Society\, the John R. Ragazzini and O. Hugo Schuck Awards from the American Automatic Control Council\, and the IEEE Third Millennium Medal. Dr. Spong is Past President of the IEEE Control Systems Society and a Fellow of both the IEEE and IFAC. \nDr. Spong\’s work has been instrumental in establishing the theoretical foundations of robot control\, and the results he has produced over the past three decades have been implemented in systems at companies and research development facilities around the world\, including Sandia National Labs in New Mexico and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. He has produced innovative solutions in robotics that have stood the test of time to become now-classic results in robotic control. \nHis work also led to the first practical solution of the problem of time-delay compensation in bilateral teleoperation\, which was a major impediment to the development of undersea and space robots\, and he was the first to show how poor performance in robot arms due to uncertainties and joint elasticity could be overcome with advanced nonlinear feedback control methods that he helped to develop. \nDr. Spong has also had a major impact on robotics education. He co-authored one of the most popular textbooks on robot dynamics and control\, which is still in use after more than 20 years. In addition\, he developed both hardware and software\, marketed by a company he founded (Mechatronic Systems Inc.)\, which are being used by more than 200 universities around the world. \nCentennial Keynote Speaker\nFaa-Ching Wang\, PhD\, Founder\, CIE/USA-DFW Chairman & President\, ConsulPath Inc. Retired Business Unit General Manager\, Texas Instruments Inc\n \nFor the past 35 years\, Dr. Faa-Ching Wang has made exemplary contributions to the engineering profession and semiconductor industry. Subsequent to the retirement from Texas Instruments in 2013\, Dr. Wang started-up his own business ConsulPath Inc.\, which since has provided governing and management services as investment fund advisor and Board of Director of companies from investment acquisition in the high-tech industries. \nFor 24 years\, Texas Instruments entrusted Dr. Wang on many special tasks. As General Manager of worldwide printer head business unit\, Dr. Wang was responsible for the general management of the company’s printer head integrated circuit business for the delivery of 1.1 billion units of ICs. His responsibilities cover the full scope of business activities from marketing\, customer relationships and new technology/product development to factory manufacturing operation and supply chain management of six factories located around the world. Prior to the business assignment\, Dr. Wang worked in operation which he contributed to 4 advanced wafer fab start-ups and served as wafer fab manager of two TI advanced wafer fabs. Prior to TI\, Dr. Wang was the Director of Crystal Engineering/QA of Ethyl Corporation. Prior to this\, Dr. Wang was a Member of the Technical Staff of the Hewlett-Packard Company. \nFaa-Ching earned his Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University in 1982. He received a Master’s degree in Physics from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978\, and a Bachelor’s degree in Physics from National Central University in Taiwan in 1974. Dr. Wang held four U.S. patents and five invention disclosures\, and published 39 technical articles. He is the recipient of the 2009 Asian American Engineering of the Year Award\, National Engineering Week Foundation\, and the 1999 National Asian American Corporate Achievement Award\, Organization of Chinese Association. He is also awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Community Service from City of Richardson\, Texas in 2014.
