DESCRIPTION: \nThe annual convention is a celebration of the services that CIE/USA-DFW has delivered to the DFW community\, and to affirm the partnership we have with industry\, universities\, government and community in which our members live and work. CIE/USA takes great pride of its 96 years of history\, serving and representing the community of engineers of Chinese cultural heritage. As a non-profit professional organization\, CIE/USA plays an important role in our economy and our society\, especially with the growing needs for business savvy skilled workers in the field of engineering and science. \nThe convention will feature three events: \nVIP Reception (5:30 – 6:30 pm)\nVIP Reception is by invitation only. Proclamation of “CIE Day” by DFW cities will be presented\, and city mayors\, corporate senior management and academic leaders will be invited to speak at reception. \n1st Young Achievers (YA) Reunion (4:30 – 6:30 pm)\nCIE Young Achievers are capable individuals demonstrating expansive interests\, a drive to succeed\, and high performance. These individuals are selected during their high school years. At the Young Achiever Reunion\, held during the 2013 annual convention\, Young Achievers from previous years will gather for to catch up and share their experiences\, ambitions\, and lessons. Dr. Keh-Shew Lu\, founder of CIE/USA-DFW and president of Diodes will provide the keynote speech. Wen-Shin Wang\, a former YA\, will be speaking career development\, networking\, and job experiences. Former Young Achievers can socialize\, and bios of current experiences and future work will be available in a streaming presentation. At the conclusion of the event\, there will be a panel discussion for various topics revolving about success in the workplace through soft skills and effective communication\, including conflict resolution\, influencing\, and pitfalls in communication. DESCRIPTION:Roles and Responsibilities of Asian Universities in a New Global Academic-Business Paradigm\nby Dr. Da-Hsuan Feng\n \n21st century\, even in these fledgling moments\, is met with transformational changes. These changes cannot be more obvious than the creation of a new Global academic- business paradigm. Sitting in the middle of this paradigm is Asia\, especially North Asia\, Southeast Asia and South Asia. These regions are indeed the focus of the world in the 21st century. They are undergoing dizzying economic\, cultural\, political and unexpected and 20th century unthinkable tectonic shifts. With this as underpinning\, Dr. Feng’s talk which could be a summary of his five year stay in Asia\, breathing day in and day out of higher education atmosphere\, will discuss what mindset Asian higher education needs to have in order to navigate in such exciting and turbulent waters. Indeed\, what and how Asian universities are meeting or attempting to meet their new challenges and become the engines of progress for their respective regions. Finally\, what Global responsibilities they should assume as they emerge so rapidly in the Global higher education radar screen. \nDr. Feng received an B.A. in Physics from Drew University\, an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. He was born in New Delhi\, India and has been a global traveler ever since. He was a Technical advisor to Vice Chairman of the US Congressional Arm Services Committee from 1995 to 1998\, Vice President of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) from 1998 to 2000\, Vice President for Research and Economic Development of The University of Texas at Dallas from 2001 to 2007\, Senior Executive Vice President\, National Cheng Kung University from 2007 to 2011. In 2007\, he was appointed by Li Ka-Shing Foundation to be a Board of Trustees member of Shantou University. He was also a co-Chair since 2007 of the Britton Chance Center for Biomedical Photonics of Huazhong University of Science & Technology. In 2011\, he was appointed by Elsevier to be a member of its Academic Executive Advisory Board. He also co-sponsored CIRA. He has collaborated with Asian colleagues over past 30 years – including becoming the Honorary Board of Trustees of Nanjing University in 2003\, and becoming honorary and guest professors of twelve Mainland’s universities

It is designed to encourage the young generation of the CIE community to achieve academic excellence\, to participate in extracurricular activities and community services\, and to develop leadership skills in the early stage of their life. The YAA program achieves these goals through special recognition of the students who have demonstrated high level of excellence in the above areas\, through recommendations from the various sources with which we could evaluate their achievements. This particular recognition has proven to be very beneficial to the YAA recipients in their applications to colleges and universities\, as well as a powerful credential for their careers down the road. \nThe Chinese Institute of Engineers (CIE) DFW Chapter is kicking off the 2010 YAA program this week. The 2010 YAA Committee of CIE/USA-DFW is accepting applications from May 10\, through July 12. Interested parents should encourage their students to apply for the YAA Award\, to effectively increase their credibility in the college application process. The CIE membership is open to all working professionals in the fields of science\, technology\, engineering and management. \nEligibility: \n\nThe applicant must be enrolled in the 10th or 11th grade in a DFW area high school during the Spring 2010 semester.\nThe applicant’s class ranking must be within the top 10% in the Spring of 2010.\nThe parent of the applicant must be a current member of CIE/USA-DFW Chapter. Join CIE-DFW\nPast YAA award recipients are not eligible\n\nCriteria of Award Recipient Selection: \n\nAcademic performance (GPA and Ranking): 30%\nCommunity services and extracurricular activities participation: 40%\nPersonal aspiration – Biography: 15%\nRecommendations\nRecommendation from teacher of your current school: 7%\nCommunity Service Leader\’s or extracurricular advisor\’s recommendation: 8%\n\nForms to Fill and Submit \n\n2010 Young Achiever Award Application Form\nApplicant\’s Biography – a personal essay\nOfficial High Schooland College academic records\nSchool Teacher\’s Recommendation letter\nCommunity Service Leader\’s or extracurricular advisor\’s recommendation letter\nApplicant\’s recent portrait picture (passport style)
